The Department is engaged in a $57 million construction and safety improvement project that includes rehabilitation, reconstruction and upgrades to 6.4 miles of the Merritt Parkway (northbound & southbound) as well as several bridge structures.

The temporary concrete barriers protect work zones and are placed in two (2); 1.5 mile configurations in each direction. Work behind these barriers includes saw cutting and removal of the existing pavement, excavation and installation of new drainage. We are also building a stronger shoulder and clearing trees to improve safety. As the work is completed the work zones will move accordingly. When work in the right shoulders is complete we will move the barrier to the left shoulder and rehabilitate the median. Upon completion of the all roadway rehabilitation all of the temporary barrier will be removed and the roadway will receive a final layer of Hot Mix Asphalt.

The final lane widths will not change from original however; the roadway will have better drainage, wider shoulders, and improved sightline. The guard rail and median barrier will be upgraded to the current Merritt Parkway standards. The completion of the overall Contract is scheduled for the fall of 2015.
